With the 16th Asian Games to be held in 2010, Guangzhou has ordered urban construction and environmental protection to be sped up in terms of the current schedule for the Eleventh Five-year Plan.
On April 14th, Ding Hongdu, Director of the Bureau of Environmental Protection of Guangzhou Municipality, at a meeting on environmental protection, said that great efforts would be made to improve air and water quality and reduce pollutants in order to turn Guangzhou into an exemplary EcoCity before 2010.
Ding said that Guangzhou had formulated detailed measures that focus on the following three steps:
First; to firmly implement Phase 2 of the "Beautiful Mountain, Green Land, Blue Sky and Clean Water" Project which has been launched and to focus on the five facets regarding urban forestation, optimization of industrial structure and reduction of pollutants.
Second; to build Guangzhou into a National Hygienic City in terms of the Plan for Construction of a National Hygienic City formulated by the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government.
Third; to build Guangzhou into an EcoCity by 2010. In terms of the Eleventh Five-year Plan, great changes will have taken place related to Guangzhou's environment by 2010 when athletes and guests for 16th Asian Games will see a new Guangzhou where citizens live and work comfortably.
