Guangzhou has been selected as the first demonstration city of informatization and, as a result, it will build an information port having radiation functions.
Recently Inspector Zhang Baotai of the Department of Informatization Promotion of Ministry of Information Industry announced that Guangzhou was selected as the national demonstration city. He said that as a demonstration city, Guangzhou has to take advantage of its position as a modern metropolis and play the leading role in Guangdong Province and Southern China as a model of the benefits of informatization.
It was learned during the Guangzhou IT Week that the city will have a wireless broadband network which will cover the whole city by 2010. The wireless network will be available in offices, shopping centers, hospitals, and, indeed, on any corner.
The Director of the Guangzhou Municipal Informatization Office, Xie Xuening, also said that before the 2010 Asian Games, 80% of government administrative units licensing items may be settled via internet. By 2010 too, the ownership rate of PCs is estimated to be 120% and citizen cards issued by public agencies will total over 5 million and that the public electronic mailboxes will reach 2 million.
